It’s not often that an act revisits a venue after just a few weeks, but antipodean extravaganza the Great Australian Drag Show, which proved such a hit during Komedia’s opening weekend, returns to Bath by popular demand on Friday January 16, with new songs, new frocks and more of the most awe-inspiring, sing-a-long drag you will ever see.
The launch of Komedia Bath back in November gave the city’s LGBT community much to celebrate, with plenty of gay-themed cabaret, comedy and music nights sprinkled liberally throughout its line-up. Central to the Komedia programme is the monthly gay-friendly comedy night Bent Double, but they nailed their pink flag to the mast in style on their second night with gender-bending musical parody extravaganza the Great Australian Drag Show, a show which has toured the world, garnering rave reviews in New York, Edinburgh and London.
The Great Australian Drag Show comprises four Priscilla-style Australian drag queens � hiding behind the names Jessica James, Kris del Vaise, Linda Lamont and Amanda Monroe – with a taste for self-satire and a wicked turn of phrase. This is old-school drag, with the company lip-syncing their way through a cavalcade of cheesy dance tunes, camp classics and sixties standards. They’re all the glam and glitter, sequins and sparkle, and if this bunch doesn’t draw out your inner drag then nothing will.
Back in the city after an incredibly successful seven-week season in Edinburgh, the four man troupe provide a hysterically funny evening’s entertainment, sending up divas and gay icons from Dusty to Diana. I was in the audience when they last played Komedia Bath and can honestly say I have never laughed so much at a bunch of men in dresses. It’s no wonder that their performances have received rave reviews wherever they’ve toured. This is an absolute must; if you miss this one you’ll regret it.
