Elle Fanning belts out Robyn single for new teen film

Elle Fanning as Violet in Teen Spirit

Actor Elle Fanning is taking on the role of an aspiring pop star in the new film Teen Spirit — and the movie features Fanning singing the songs of many artists beloved by LGBTI people.

Directed by Max Minghella, Teen Spirit tells the story of Violet Valenski (Fanning).

Violet is a young, shy teen who has big dreams of escaping her small town and becoming a singer. When she stumbles across a local singing competition, an unlikely mentor comes to her side to help her achieve her dreams.

If the plot sounds familiar, that’s because it is, but unlike other movies about teens with aspiring big dreams, this one is steeped in true appreciation for pop music.

Rather than trying to create original pop music, Teen Spirit features music from the likes of Robyn, Ellie Goulding, Tegan & Sara, Annie Lennox, Orbital, Sigrid, and Carly Rae Jepsen. And Fanning sings the numbers all herself.

Bleecker Street released a new clip from the film featuring Fanning performing Robyn’s Dancing On My Own.

The movie also features music from Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, No Doubt, and more not sung by Fanning.

Teen Spirit recently screened at South by Southwest to glowing reviews.

Teen Spirit is slated to hit theaters on 5 April.
