A new ladies only night comes to Bristol

A new, women-only night debuts in Bristol next weekend. Fica, an Italian word for something very rude indeed, launches on Friday, December 7 at Flamingos, bringing to the city what the organiser, Fyre, is calling: "a seismic shift for the Bristol scene.
"I've set up this night because I feel that the Bristol women's scene needs it. It's about enjoying being in the company of women, but also about great music," she tells Venue. "I think too often we have nights on that are primarily just about uniting women together, but I think it's so important as well that we have a great space and atmosphere to really appreciate."
For the debut night Fyre has pulled out all of the stops. "I've tried to ensure that there's something for everyone," she tells us. Over the coming months she's bringing a stellar line up of live entertainment to the club, with the launch night seeing burlesque performer Poppy Von Tarte, the co-founder of performance art company Girls And Lard and co-founder and artistic director of Burlesque Gorefest, as well as local hip hop DJ (and part of the Dutty Girl collective) Diss Miss. It's a safe space for women to party, without having to worry about the guy at the bar thinking it's time for him to grab his sleeping bag.
Fyre says that the music at each Fica will be varied. The launch night will have an old skool funk and soul flavour, leading into house sounds as the night draws on. Live bands will take the main stage each month, with Bristol-based Djute, fronted by South African singer, guitarist and songwriter Julie Baker, kicking things off. Singled out by the Evening Post as having a "huge, interesting voice (that) can really belt out a tune, as well as writing clever lyrics and powerful, complex songs," Fyre tells us "Djute have rocky hooks with an edge, and are here to blow your mind!"
Although Fica maybe Fyre's baby, she's keen to get input from other women. "I want to involve people in creating this night," she says, "So any ideas, suggestions or input will be gratefully received. I do truly believe that this night has the potential to really big, and it needs to be supported by women to ensure that this can happen."
The Fica launch party takes place at Flamingos, West Street, Bristol, on Friday, December 7, 9pm-4am. Entrance is £6 on the door, although reduced price entry of £5 is available with a Fica flyer which can be obtained by emailing daisymaisymoo@hotmail.com
