Swindon’s MailCoach Closes

One of Swindon’s two gay venues, The Mailcoach in the town’s Fleet Street has suddenly closed just after Christmas. A notice on the venue’s website has announced a final party, thanked its visitors for their custom and support over the last two years and asked them to ‘watch this space’.

The closure of The Mailcoach, leaves The Pink Rooms remaining in Regent Circus as the only other gay venue in the town.

The closure, which is believed to have come about following pressure from Enterprise Inns, the venues owning company, has been said that it is unconnected to recent troubles the venue has experienced with Swindon Borough Council. It was reported at the time that the venue could be temporarily closed down or have certain conditions placed on it’s licence.

The pub was a popular venue for the town’s gay and lesbian community and in May, it also played host to Cherie Blair as she campaigned on behalf of the Labour Party.

A Facebook group has been set-up to allow regulars to keep in touch, and find out any latest news.
