LGBT History Month 2013
Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans History Month takes place every year in February. It celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community and once more there are lots of varied activities planned in our area.
The month is committed to celebrate diversity and that of the society as a whole. Encouraging everyone to see diversity and cultural pluralism as the positive forces that they are and endeavour to reflect this in all we do. Each year is focussed on a theme and in 2013, the month will be dedicated to Maths, science and engineering.
Local LGBT groups have planned a large array of events, among them are OutStories, a volunteer community history group gathering the stories of LGBT people living in or associated with Bristol and its surrounds, who are staging a month long exhibition entitled “Revealing Stories”.
Running from February 2nd to March 3rd, “Revealing Stories” is an opportunity to find out how Bristol’s LGBT communities have fought to shape and control their lives since the mid 20th century. The exhibition uses specially recorded interviews with over 40 people, loans from national collections, objects, memorabilia and works of art. Includes contributions by pupil groups at local secondary schools. The exhibition is being held at the city’s M-Shed venue, located in the Harbourside.
Meanwhile, the people behind the annual pride events in the city “We:are” are also appealing to the community to share their experiences of Coming Out.
Entitled “We are: Coming Out” , people are asked use Twitter to tweet @wearefest and tell your experiences of coming out, limited to the short and snappy 140 characters and whether happy, sad, quirky or funny these stories will be collated and put together to form a legacy piece. The team will even use some to create a special musical piece which will be showcased as part of We Are: Proud – Bristol Pride 2013. For those not on twitter the stories can be emailed to :info@wearefest.com
