Swindon Pride Promises A Great Day Out

A packed day of entertainment is planned in Swindon This Saturday as the town hosts it’s annual Pride Event, an event designed to promote equality and diversity within the community

Swindon Pride was launched in 2008, with the first ever Pride festival being held in Swindon. In 2009, the Pride event was expanded to incorporate Swindon & Wiltshire Pride. This year will be the 6th event and will be once again held in the Town Gardens in Swindon’s Old Town.

The Pride event, which aims to promote equality and diversity in the local community, is free to attend, and includes a street parade with cars and marchers around the streets of Old Town, stalls dedicated to the community, families and shopping.

The event will kick off with a parade through Old Town once again this year. Organisers have asked drivers booked into the parade to be at Springfield Road gates by 10.30am, with marchers assembled 15 minutes later. This year’s parade is in support of gay marriage, and organisers are asking attendees to bring balloons, veils, tuxedos and wedding dresses as a result.

Lydia May, parade co-ordinator, said: “This is my first year on the committee. I volunteered on the day last year and had so much fun I wanted more of an active role. I have been brought up in and around the Swindon LGBT community and feel it’s time I gave something back to a community that has given me so much in my life.”

A new family area has been introduced this year and the event is set to be bigger and better than ever before. A large programme of live music and entertainment has been laid on with acts on the main stage performing from 2pm right through to 10pm.

The Gardens will also be home to a Family Zone , Community Stage and Variety Stage offering a host of whole different acts and attractions for all ages

A spokesperson for the event said: “Our headliner for Pride 2013 is the amazing, multi-talented singer, dancer, songwriter Cleo Higgins. With her love of soul, R’n’B, hip hop, reggae, pop, classical and jazz, Cleo moves fluidly between different genres and always gives the audience something special to remember. Cleo is not just a singer, songwriter, actress, brand ambassador, but also a great performer.” Cleo ,formerly of 90s pop group Cleopatra, recently wowed audiences as a solo singer on BBC’s The Voice.
