Cynthia Nixon calls out Joe Biden for describing Mike Pence as ‘decent’

Cynthia Nixon didn’t appreciate former Vice President Joe Biden’s comments about the current Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence.

Biden made the remarks about Pence at a foreign policy conference at the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Thursday (28 February).

He was discussing Pence’s remarks at the Munich Security Conference in January.

Reportedly, when Pence offered greetings from Donald Trump during his speech, he was met with silence. Biden described this moment in his own speech.

‘It was followed on by a guy who’s a decent guy, our vice-president, who stood before this group of allies and leaders and said, “I’m here on behalf of President Trump,” and there was dead silence. Dead silence,’ he said.

Not everyone was pleased with Biden calling Pence, who has been described as a ‘great threat’ to equality, ‘decent’.

Nixon, who formerly ran as a gubernatorial candidate in New York last year, was one such person. The pair had an exchange about Biden’s words on Twitter.

Biden responded directly to Nixon’s criticisms and how his words ‘falls on the ears of our community’.

‘You’re right, Cynthia,’ he said in response. ‘I was making a point in a foreign policy context, that under normal circumstance a Vice President wouldn’t be given a silent reaction on the world stage.

‘But there is nothing decent about being anti-LGBTQ rights, and that includes the Vice President.’

Nixon thanked Biden for his reply, but asked him still to consider Pence’s ‘dehumanizing of our community’ and how it disqualifies him from being described as ‘decent’.

Other people, like Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness, also reacted to Biden’s comments.

Many expect Biden to join the growing list of Democratic candidates running for president.
