Keegan, aka Kween KeeKee, is a third grader living near Austin, Texas. The 9-year-old made the local news by spreading a message of love and acceptance when he performs in drag.

His teacher once asked the class what they wanted to be when they grow up. Keegan’s response? ‘Gender creative.’

Keegan feels fully himself when he is wearing a dress. He offers the following message to anyone who may be struggling with their identity:

‘I want the world to know that you can be special, and you can be who you want to be. You can be a vegetarian, you can even be a veterinarian. You can be LGBTQ, you can be a drag queen, drag king.’

When not in drag, Keegan uses he/him/his pronouns. Despite his family being conservative Christians, he has their full support, as well as the support of the local community.

Conservative reactions

Though this sweet anecdote is coming out during Pride month, conservative news outlets are outraged that ABC affiliate KTRK promoted Keegan’s story. The story was picked up by rightwing sites like The Blaze, The Washington Examiner, Twitchy, and Weasel Zippers. People on Twitter also responded to the story with comments like ‘Ridiculous!’ and ‘This has to stop!’

Even verified accounts accosted ABC News for this story. They told ABC to delete their account, and deemed the story ‘sick exploitation.’ One verified user even likened drag to pedophilia.

And, of course, some people decided to boycott ABC over this lighthearted story.
