Jared Leto has confirmed his film about iconic pop artist Andy Warhol is going ahead.

Writing yesterday on Instagram, he said: ‘Yes, it’s true I will be playing Andy Warhol in an upcoming film. And so grateful and excited about the opportunity.’

Marking the late artist’s birthday he added: ‘Happy birthday Andy.’

It confirms the rumors from almost four years ago that Leto will star in the film. He is also producing the biopic, simply called Warhol.

Terence Winter, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter for Wolf of Wall Street, is writing the script based in part on the Victor Bockris book called Warhol: The Biography.

Leto, 48, previously won an Oscar for playing a transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club.

Warhol, who died in 1987 aged 58, was openly gay.

He made his name as a leading figure in the pop art movement which celebrated advertising and celebrity culture in the 1960s.

He is most famous for making paintings of iconic American objects. His artworks depicted dollar bills, Campbell’s Soup Cans and Coca-Cola bottles and celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Elizabeth Taylor.

However, he also produced erotic photography and drawings of male nudes throughout his career.

Meanwhile he drew from gay underground culture to create some of his most famous works, including portraits of Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland, and Elizabeth Taylor, and films such as Blow Job, My Hustler and Lonesome Cowboys.

Moreover, many of his films premiered in gay porn theaters in the late 1960s.

Warhol’s studio, The Factory, is where a wide range of artists, writers, musicians, and underground celebrities gathered.

He also managed and produced the punk rock band The Velvet Underground, founded Interview magazine and was the author of numerous books.

Indeed, Warhol even coined the widely used expression ‘15 minutes of fame’.

In his Instagram post, Leto shared photos of Warhol and wrote ‘We miss you and your genius.’
