Joe Biden.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has promised the mom of a trans kid he will ‘flat out change the law’ to help her daughter.

Former Vice President Biden made the comment as he answered questions from the audience at an ABC News town hall meeting.

Moreover he also offered a glimpse into his childhood, hinting that his dad helped him become an LGBT+ ally from a young age.

Biden seemed relaxed at the town hall meeting last night. He talked about the coronavirus pandemic and suggested he may be open to expanding the US Supreme Court bench.

Meanwhile President Donald Trump had a far more combatitive town hall on NBC. Host Savannah Guthrie challenged him on debts of $412million which Trump said was ‘no big deal’. And he failed to denounce the groundless conspiracy theories from QAnon.

The Biden and Trump presidential debate and the vice presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence disappointed campaigners when they didn’t raise LGBT+ issues.

However, audience member Mieke Haeck raised the question of trans rights in Biden’s town hall. She asked:

‘The Trump administration has attacked the rights of transgender people, banning them from military service, weakening nondiscriminatory protections and even removing the word “transgender” from some government websites.

‘How will you as president reverse this dangerous and discriminatory agenda and ensure that the lives and rights of LGBTQ people are protected under US?’

‘There should be zero discrimination’

Biden replied that Haeck’s daughter should enjoy the same rights as everyone else.

He said: ‘I would just flat-out change the law. I would eliminate [Trump’s] executive orders, number one.

‘The idea that an eight-year-old child or a 10-year-old child decides you know, I decided I want to be transgender. That’s what I think I’’ like to be. It’d make my life a lot easier. There should be zero discrimination.

‘And what’s happening is too many transgender women of color are being murdered. They’re being murdered.’

Meanwhile he also recalled a moment from his childhood. He was getting out of his dad’s car when he saw two men hug and kiss each other.

He said: ‘I turn to my dad and my dad says “Joey, it’s simple. They love each other.”’

Biden also sent another message to the LGBT+ community yesterday. He joined a host of celebrities marking Spirit Day, which campaigns each year against bullying and to support LGBT+ youth.

He tweeted: ‘This Spirit Day – and every day – we must stand up to hate and intolerance. It’s up to all of us to ensure every young person is affirmed and accepted just as they are – regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.’

Biden has promised to prioritize LGBT+ rights if he wins the election on 3 November.

He has pledged to ‘fight every day in the White House’ so LGBT+ Americans ‘can live open, proud, and free — without fear’.
