Tiger King star Carole Baskin comes out as bisexual
Carole Baskin has come out as bisexual, saying she discovered her sexuality at the height of the AIDS crisis.
Baskin became famous for the Netflix series Tiger King. It tells the true story of how redneck big cat breeder Joe Exotic plotted to kill her.
However, in an interview with Pink News, she reveals she discovered a very different face to the LGBT+ community in the 1980s. She was engaged to a psychologist working with people struggling with the AIDS pandemic:
‘I was engaged to a psychologist, and that was his entire field, dealing with the LGBT+ community.
‘It was during the period when AIDS was just wreaking havoc around the world, and people were losing their loved ones, and so I became very close to people in that community then.
‘I discovered that through dealing with the LGBT+ community that I [realized] I had just as equal feelings for women as I did for men.
‘I have always considered myself to be bisexual. Even though I’ve never had a wife, I could just as easily have a wife as a husband.’
‘I was always very male-oriented’
Baskin – who owns Big Cat Rescue and was recently eliminated from America’s Dancing With The Stars – also said she was a ‘tomboy’ growing up.
‘I was always very male-oriented in the things I did… I never had any mothering instincts or anything, you know, I never played with dolls. And so I always thought that there was something off there, that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
‘As far as the way I feel about us, I think we are all one and I just don’t see us as being different genders or different colours or anything.’
However she doesn’t think Exotic is a good example of the LGBT+ community. She said:
‘I think he’s an embarrassment to the human community.
‘It’s not a matter of what your sexuality is, this man is just a deviant in the way that he treats human life and animal life.’
She is using the money she earned on Dancing With The Stars to fund Big Cat Rescue. The center has lost $1million during the coronavirus pandemic.
At the same time, Tiger King dropped on Netflix. And Baskin said it misrepresented Big Cat Rescue and even resulted in people threatening to burn the premises down.
However she said bobcats inspire her to keep on fighting the bad guys:
‘They’re only 20 to 30 pounds, but they will take on anything or anybody and they just will not back down.
‘I love that as a goal to strive for, no matter how big and scary that bad guy is.’
Meanwhile Exotic remains in prison for the plot to murder Baskin. Last month he begged President Donald Trump for a pardon.
