Chippenham Appoints Openly Gay Mayor

Councillor Declan Baseley has recently been appointed as the new Mayor of Chippenham in a recent ceremony which took place at the Town’s Neeld Hall.

Mr Baseley, 27, who represents the Green Party was invested on Wednesday 24th May by Chippenham Town Council who also bid farewell and thanks to the previous incumbent Councillor Liz Alstom.

Upon his appointment Mr Baseley told BBC News it was “incredibly important” to acknowledge how views had become more progressive over the years.It was wonderful to know I had the backing of all my colleagues… it meant a lot,” he said.

Asked by the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Pete Cousins, Leader of the Council presented his nomination for Councillor Declan Baseley, and invited all Councillors to show their support with a show of hands.
Councillor Baseley read the Declaration of Acceptance of Office of Mayor and signed his signature in confirmation.
