Bristol Council & UWE Win Stonewall Employer Awards

Bristol City Council and The University of West of England (UWE) have been named amongst the top 100 best employers of Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual people in Great Britain.

The Workplace Equality Index is Britain’s leading tool for employers to measure their efforts to tackle discrimination and create inclusive workplaces for lesbian, gay and bisexual employees. Since 2005 more than 750 major employers have taken part in the Index, using Stonewall’s criteria as a model for good practice.

Bristol City Council were ranked 21st, with University of the West of England in joint 45th place. Other local winners included the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service at joint 91st.

The Stonewall Top 100 Employers is compiled from submissions to the Workplace Equality Index. Now in its ninth year, the Index is a free and comprehensive benchmarking tool for employers to measure their efforts to create inclusive workplaces for lesbian, gay and bisexual employees

Ben Summerskill, Chief Executive of Stonewall said “In a climate in which every business, charity and public body must find ways of doing more with less, no employer can afford to ignore the most critical resource of all – their workforce. Research shows that lesbian, gay and bisexual employees are more productive, creative, loyal and successful when they have the confidence, support and security to truly be themselves at work.”
